Chapter Sixteen

Andreona’s chest felt pummelled with emotion, her thoughts were a roiling dark chaos. Malcolm’s kiss should have been nothing she wanted. But though his grip on her chemise was fierce, and some energy was roiling off him towards her, his lips were firm, soft. They coaxed and she answered.

Her hands on his chest, leaning in as she had the tree, finding support, strength in him as she did its roots while he murmured words she only half understood. When he trailed his tongue along the seam of her lips, she gasped. Lips parted, they both took in air and their need for each other.

His hand released her hip and moved to her throat, his thumb resting on her pulse there. Her heart beat that bit faster.

‘Andreona?’ he asked. His green eyes studied her, though it was difficult to know what was in his thoughts since the moonlight barely shone through the tree canopy. She was aware the house was out of sight and perhaps its occupants were asleep or not. Any of them could take the same walk she had and the trees didn’t provide privacy or shelter from the elements.

She didn’t want shelter from the elements. She wanted Malcolm to say her name like a question. One that only she knew the answer to.

Leaning into him again, she brushed her lips against his and his hand skimmed the column of her neck to cup her jaw, his lips pressing more, giving a longer taste of his kiss, of this man.

Sifting her fingers through his wayward curls, then drifting them along the back of his neck, she felt his body shiver at the small touch.

Liking that, she brushed more of her fingertips behind his ear; he shuddered, slid his hand along her waist and pulled her impossibly tighter.

His lips turned hot and demanding, slanting his head, his tongue finding hers, searching for the answers she hadn’t given him yet. A breath of a moment—was she willing?

Yes, she was. The way he felt, the way he held her... She was willing to give him anything. Everything. Using his shoulders to pull herself up, she couldn’t wait to increase their kisses and shuddering breaths.

He froze so suddenly she didn’t know what he was about until he pulled back. No green to his eyes, no questions, only a distance that was confusing with the heat of his hand against her cheek, the tight grip around her waist.

‘It’s late and cold,’ he said. ‘We’re outside.’

Why was he talking of their surroundings? He shifted and she realised he wanted to leave her.

‘No,’ she blurted. Her hands clutched his shoulders. His expression was unreadable. Hers, she knew, was too tender and exposed in the swirling mists.

She wanted whatever this was. Kisses, the hint of more. Having never had a brush of a man’s hand against hers, she was as untouched as could be, but she’d seen others in the corners of halls.

The want, the urgency. Stolen moments between two people broken apart because Gorka’s child stumbled upon them.
